Does Low Grade Fever, Nausea And White Hairy Tongue After Having Sex Suggest HIV?
I m 21 year-old guy (homosexual) I had an unprotected sex with a man. From that time I was always thinking and worrying of having infected with HIV. Two weeks later after exposure, I had low-grade fevers (or actually feeling feverish) for 4 weeks with muscle pain, stomach cramps, little nausea, white hairy tongue. Could I have been infected with HIV? Can anxiety and worrying cause these symptoms? Thanks in advance.
Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthacremagic
Unprotected sexual contact, whether vaginal or anal, with a person of unknown status, is a high risk affair. If I was the treating doctor I would have asked for an HIV test report. Since 4 weeks have already passed since that particular encounter, testing with an HIV combo test (P24 Antigen Antibody test) would be appropriate and will either confirm or rule out HIV. This test has a high sensitivity for HIV detection (detects infection in 99.8% of those infected after 28 days of risky sexual contact). Your symptoms could be unrelated to HIV, but it is better to get tested for your own peaceof mind than to speculate whether they are due to HIV or unrelated.
