Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Medication For Diabetes For Triglycerides Cause Chronic Diarrhea?
I chose all the symptoms that I could with the help of my daughter. She has diabetes II and recently had Pneumonia. She was hospitalized for it about a month ago and she took all her meds. Today she woke up with intestinal cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, chills, then fatigue a fever of 103 degrees , did not want to eat and pain in upper abdomen also. She takes the following meds due to previous conditions. She had a bone marrow transplant when she was 6 years old so her magnesium and potassium are low so she takes meds for that. For tryglicerides she takes crestor, Omega three 1 gr 4 x a day and for diabetes she takes glipizide, pioglitazone and gemfibrozil . We don t know if her chronic diahrrea is due to the meds or something she eats.
* A recent history of hospitalization for pneumonia must be undergoing the course of intravenous antibiotics for respiratory pathogens.
* The common side effect among these agents is Pseudomembranous collitis causing green, watery diarrhea through chlostridia difficile species most likely.
She requires the best physician care in this regard for the earliest recovery and prevents further complications of electrolytes and others.
- anti-emetic medicine as ondansetron or domperidone
- proton pump inhibitor as omeprazole or pantoprazole to combat the gastric upset
- GI specific antibiotics as metronidazole
- pro and prebiotics with lactobacillus content
- control of blood sugar
- discussion regarding any dose adjustment requirement for current medications of diabetes and lipid disorder.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
