Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hello there,

Apparently, it seems that you are taking metformin and oral contraceptive pills for hirsutism, likely due to PCOD. These two are standard forms of treatment of PCOD, only the situations in which each of these drugs are used, differ from patient to patient. For that your Endocrinologist is in a better position to decide whether you need these drugs or not.

Regarding side effects of drugs, almost all of the drugs have side effects. Even simple paracetamol can be harmful. Its always the risk-benefit ratio that we talk about. If the benefit of using a drug is more than the risk involved, its approved for clinical use.

For using any particular drug, individual case to case assessment is also necessary. For example, if a patient is more than 35 yrs, has high lipid levels, is a smoker and has hypertension, Oral Contraceptive Pill (OCP) use is not a good idea in such a patient, but if these cluster of risk factors is absent, OCPs may be used.

Hope it helps.....
