Does Non Hormonal IUD Cause Extreme Pain During Intercourse?

A good friend just phoned me. She has had a non hormonal IUD in place for about six months. She phoned me this morning and said that sex was very painful this morning and that it is continuing. The pains so bad that she finds it hard to sit down. Does she need to see a doctor? What could be causing this pain?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concern. IUDs, weather hormonal or non-hormonal could cause inflammation of the cervix and vaginal mucosa, which might be the reason for painful intercourse or pain following intercourse. It would be better to take an ultrasound scan of the abdomen and consult Gynaecologist promptly with the report for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.

Hope the information provided would be helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
