Does On And Off Intake Of Contraceptive Pills Cause Irregular Periods?

Hi I have been using aralcon contraceptives since January and i discontinued the first packet. Then i started using it again in February when my periods started and it caused prolonged periods and spotting so i discontinued it again. Since my last spotting in the first week of march i have not had my periods. Could that be the cause?

Hello,

Yes, starting and stopping the use of contraceptive pills can cause irregular periods. Contraceptive pills contain hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle, and stopping or starting them can disrupt the hormonal balance in the body.

When you stop taking the pill, it may take some time for your body to adjust and for your menstrual cycle to return to its normal pattern. It is not unusual to experience irregular periods or spotting when you start or stop taking contraceptive pills. In your case, since you have stopped taking the pill after experiencing prolonged periods and spotting, it is possible that your menstrual cycle has been disrupted.

However, if you have been sexually active since stopping the pill, it is important to rule out the possibility of pregnancy. It is recommended that you consult with your gynecologist to discuss your concerns and determine the best course of action. They may recommend waiting for a few more weeks to see if your period returns on its own or suggest further testing to determine the cause of your missed period.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
