Does Physical Therapy Help In Treating Chronic Pain Temporarily?

I have been diagnosed with degenerative disc in my neck as well as osteoarthritis. The pain is sometimes unbearable. I just started physical therapy last Friday and was feeling a little better, however last night I was awake all night with pain. My question is will physical therapy only help with pain temporarily?
