Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
If I have secondary Polycythemia, cronic sleep apnea, can that effect your heart? My sister is having open heart surgery for hypotrophic cardiomyopathy and her Dr said it is genetic. I had a ecocardiogram that said I have a mild hypotrophic thickening in my bottom left ventracal, so not sure if this will be like my sisters, so with all my other problems I want to know if this can cause problems in my heart.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Polycthemia does predispose people to develop clots. On the other hand chronic sleep apnea can predispose people to develop pulmonary hypertension and subsequent left heart dysfunction. now, since you additionally have a family history of heart disease, you should just undergo 6 monthly check-ups with your cardiologist. It is not a smart idea to get anxious and worked up about this. Just follow-up every 6 months, and you will be fine.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
