Does Potassium Rich Food Help In Treating DVT In Legs?

after giving birth to my son I was given blood thinning injections to prevent dvt (my mother has dvt after she gave birth to me) as I was told the condition could be passed down. The first year was fine and had no problems but then I started to get clots in my legs and was given anti-biotics and every six months or so I am still getting clots and swelling in the legs. It has made it very hard to lose weight but was advised to do gentle walking to keep the blood circulating. My doctor has now put me forward for tests.I really do not want my veins to be stripped as I see how my mum suffers(she takes warfarin daily). I was told eating alot of food with potassium helps. How much do you need? and does it help?

Hi there,

There are a couple of different issues here that I'm reading in your question. The first thing that I noticed is that your mother also had a history of blood clots, so this could be a hereditary issue that causes you to be hyper coagulable or clot more easily. There are certain conditions such as Protein C/S deficiency or Factor V leiden that will make you more prone to clot. This is important to know, because if you're more prone to clot you should be on blood thinning medications. I would get tested for them. It would also be helpful for your children to know as well.

Antibiotics are not an effective treatment for blood clots, not is stripping of veins. There is no surgical procedure that will prevent blood clots, and I would definitely avoid any surgeon who offers this procedure. Veins can be stripped for cosmetic reasons such as varicose veins, but this will NOT prevent blood clots.

Since you have a history of blood clots, you should also be on warfarin daily as well, because the problem is that these clots can travel to your lung and cause a pulmonary embolism - which can be fatal. This causes a clot to block the blood flow to your lungs. I would recommend you be on a blood thinner such as warfarin for life if you have had multiple clots. You can also take blood thinners that don't need monitoring such as Pradaxa.

Finally, I don't know of any study that shows foods with potassium will help you to prevent blood clots. I would stay as active as possible with daily exercise with walking for at least 30 minutes a day (better if you can run or job and do more time). On long car rides or planes I would get up and walk every 2 hours. Avoid any situation where you are sitting in one place for long periods of time. I hope this is helpful. Please contact me if you have any questions.
