Does Prolonged Intake Of Medication For Crohn’s Disease Cause Side Effects?

My granddaughter is 11 yo and was dx w/Crohn s when she was 10. After over 19 medications, she was sent for second opinion to Ped Gastro. She is now on Imuran, Probiotic, vitamin and monthly infusion of Remicade. I worry about the long term effects on her immune reproductive systems and the side effects on her liver from these medications. She has recently been taken off steroids (on them since December hospitalization) They are monitoring blood work. Are there any things we, as a family, and she can do to make her life easier (short/long-term)?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your granddaughter of 11 years diagnosed as Crohns and thus on multiple medications, wants to know the side effects, long term effects on immunity and so on.
The first principle of medical service is to decide whether the disease is greater or the management/medicines.
The clear balance between the two decides the management of any disease and hence your worry about the future of the child although is correct then think and discuss about the life of the child if no treatment is taken.
This will give the final decision and worry about the future.
Treatment must have been a must thus only allowed to carry on.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
