Does Propylthiouracil Cause Hormonal Problems And Prevent Pregnancy?

I am 25 years old female. I have enlarged thyroid gland(Hypertyroidism). I noticed this enlargement before 11 years.T3,T4,TSH was done and It was normal by then. I took no medication. Back then, my doctor told me that it will disapear with aging and I continued my follow up. But,before 6 months T3,T4 & TSH was done and it becomes that total T3 high, total T4 low and free T3 and free T4 is normal but TSH is low. I have palpitation and hot intolerance. My doctor told me to start PTU 100mg po daily. But, I need to be pregnant soon and I have doubt that I may not stop the medicine in short period of time. what do you think? My doctor said I am in subclinical stage and good to start not to be toxic. I am very much confused that this medication will cause different hormonal problems and when it will be controlled. what do you suggest? which is better being pregnant before starting or what? Laboratory investigation result T3, 2.72 pg/ml Ra.Ra 1.71-3.71 T4,0.85ng/dl Ra.Ra 0.70-1.48 TSH 0.18000/ml Ra.Ra 0.49-4.67add regards..Sel

Hello,
Thank you for using HCM!
I read your concerns carefully and i am trying to give you some information related to your situation.
As you mentioned, you are diagnosed with subclinical hyperthyroidism but did you do further exams to find out the ethiology? It would be very important because if it is autoimmune Graves' disease it should be monitored very closely during pregnancy.
I would recommend you to measure the antireceptor antibodies of the TSH (so to confirm Graves' disease) and to start a pregnancy only after the normalisation of the TSH level.
The antibodies that cause autoimmune thyroiditis (antireceptor antibodies of TSH), are able to cross the placenta and effect the thyroid function of the fetus. So, if they are positive, both the mother and the fetus may have problems during pregnancy and should stay under close monitoring.
Hope this information will be somewhat helpful.

Kind regards,
Dr.M.Guni
