Does Shooting A Nail Through The Thumb Cause Injury To The Bone?

My son just shot a nail through his thumb with a nail gun and nailed it to a board. He was able to pull it off the nail and washed it. Question was, is there any risk of injuring the bone...should he just keep an eye on it and watch for infection?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain in case if the nail is shot in the centre or middle of finger then there is a possibility that the bone had got a shot while if it is along the sides of finger it can be only pierced soft tissues..

The exact status can be ruled out only after a clinical evaluation and an x ray, so you should not wait and watch and consult an Orthopedician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and x ray can help in diagnosis and treatment will be planned accordingly..

As of now you can give her Advil for pain..
Apply antiseptic ointment for preventing infection..
Do cool compresses if thee is swelling..
You can also get a tetanus toxoid injection after consulting the doctor..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
