Does Skin Discoloration Around The Neck Indicate Diabetes?

HI, I recently read that skin discoloration, darkening, in certain areas can be a sign of other health issues, the diagnosis in this particular story was diabetes. My daughter has darkening of the skin around her neck and arm pits that is not resolved with washing the area. She has recently had blood work done and the only result that came back is that she s anemic, is there something else that could be causing her skin discoloration?

Hello,

Your daughter concern may be Psuedoacanthosis nigricans. It may be obesity or hypothyroidism or diabetes or idiopathic which usually runs in the families.

Have a consultation with an endocrinologist for further evaluation. Nothing serious.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sandeep Golla
