Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband recently had a stent put in his RAC. He s working really hard to quit smoking. In fact, he hasn t smoked at all, but he has taken to using 3-4 SNUS a day (snuff packets). I m sure he will quit these soon too, but in the mean time we d like to know if smokeless tobacco contributes to atherosclerosis? We are certainly aware of the dangers of mouth, throat, and GI cancers and hypertension, but our direct question is concerning the arteries.
Hello, Thank you for asking your question at healthcare magic
Recent studies have shown moderately increased risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis of arteries especially in people with history of previous cardiovascular disease in smokeless tobacco users. Moreover hypertension associated with SNUS use can also adversely affect your heart. I recommend that your husband need to discontinue SNUS use as soon as possible. You can consult your primary care provider to get help for quitting smoking.
Hope I was able to answer your question Please feel free to address any more concerns, Regards, Dr.Lekshmi
