Does Smoking Marijuana Cause Complications During A Hernia Surgery?

I am scheduled for laproscopic hernia surgery in three days. I am a regular cannibus smoker but will not smoke between now and the surgery. I will be under general anesthesia. Will I have issues or problems and should I reschedule the surgery? I am a 53 year old male in very good shape other than this and I am embarrassed to tell anyone.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Would not be expected to cause that. Marijuana, or any inhalant, may cause lung irritation. This should be evaluated during a simple physical to see if the lungs are very bad. If there is mild effects on lungs or mild elevation of heart rate, this isn't going to change risk of surgery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
