Hi, I have just received confirmation that i have got a staphylococcal infection in the vagina and i am 13 weeks pregnant. i have had quite bad symptoms for 6 weeks and was misdiagnosed with thrush in the beginning. can this be harmful to my baby and do you think it is something i am likely to have to deal with on and off throughout my pregnancy? i am waiting for a prescript my doc has sent out so dont know the treatment prescribed yet. thanks for your help.

Hello ma'am and welcome.

A vaginal infection during pregnancy is commonly encountered and is nothing to worry about. The only cause for slight concern is the use of antibiotics to address the infection, as most medications pass through the placenta to reach the fetus. For this reason doctors prefer not to use any medications at all during pregnancy, but I am sure your doctor will choose a medication which will not cause any harm to your baby.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
