Does Starting Outside Milk For 4.5 Month Cause Any Side Effects?

Hi Doctor, my daughter is 4.5 months old and she is completely on breastfeeding. I have to join my office from june when she will be 5 months old. Could you please suggest what external food can be given to her when I am out for work. Shall I give her outside milk like Amul Taaza with water , moong dal water and rice water? If yes in what quantity should it be given?

Hi,

The doctors advise only breast milk for first 6 months of a child. Breast milk can be continued as long as up to 2 years of life after this, but with other iron fortified infant formula along with other semi- solid or solid foods. However, the weaning from breast milk should be in a gradual manner starting with one dose substitution in the beginning for few days and then gradually increasing the no. of substitutions every few days, till the weaning is complete.

The complete weaning may take from a few weeks to a month or more. Breast milk can be substituted by infant formula, other milk products or therapeutic milk etc. Common milk alternatives may be soy, rice, coconut and nut (almond, cashew nuts) milk or oat milk. Juices or yogurt may be also substituted for milk. Serving of yogurt should be only one serving per day in the beginning which may be increased according to need and taste of the baby (almonds or cashew nuts).

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
