Does Taking Benzodiazepine And Valproic Acid Together Cause Liver Damage?

Thankyou, hallo my name is Margaret; my question is that I have a dear friend whose husband is on dialysis 3 times a week, he is 63 years of age and has been in renal failure for several years. My deep concern is that during the resent petite grand mal seizure, with two previous ones in the past two months, and hospitalized now with a 9 kidney output. He has been given the drug Valprocic acid and I understand their are serious, if not fatal side effects with liver damage for one. He is not bi-polar This drug along with Benzodiazapin given him, could they be doing prolonged damage.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Though Valproate and Benzodiazepines have liver damage as potential side effects, they are not among the commonest of side effects due to theses drugs.
Your doctor also must have considered these possibilities before starting these drugs. He started these meds because he/she found the benefits of these drugs weighed more than the remote possibility of liver damage by them. I recommend having faith in your doctor.
Just keep an eye on any signs of liver damage you see so that it can be treated at the earliest. Signs like-
-Yellowish discoloration of skin and eyes
-Dark colored urine
-White or clay colored stools.
-Confusion, altered state of mind.
hope this resolves your query. Thank you.
