I was sick after taking Doxycycline yesterday morning. I had not eaten anything beforehand. I took my 100mg dose last night after having a decent meal earlier and wasn t sick but I felt like I had a sore tummy through the night. Not agony but didn t feel quite right. Is this normal on Doxycycline and how can I counteract this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern regarding the safety of Doxycycline.

Yes, it may cause stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting.

Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic commonly used to treat many susceptible bacterial infections such as acne, urinary tract infections, pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections.

It is best taken by mouth on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.

Since you seem to have developed stomach upset, so I advise you to take it with a full glass of water after having the food and do not lie down for 10 minutes after taking this medication.

However, avoid taking it along with milk, dairy products(such as curd, ice cream, chocolates, yoghurt) as they may reduce its absorption from the intestines and make it less effective.

Hope I could answer your queries.
Best regards.

General & Family Physician Dr. Sanjay Kini's  Response
Yes. Doxy on empty stomach may cause gastritis and pain abdomen. To combat gastritis you need to follow some lifestyle tips

1. Do not eat spicy food
2. Take medications for gastritis- pantop/omez/rantac
3. Take little food at frequent intervals. Breakfast around 8am, small snack at 11am, lunch at 1pm, small snack at 4pm and dinner at 8pm
4. Drink plenty of water
5. Do not smoke, take alcohol or tobacco and even excess of coffee and tea
6. Do not take much of stress. Stress aggravates gastritis
7. Do regular exercise. Atleast half an hour per day
8. Learn meditation techniques
9. Follow this regularly for 21 days. It is said that anything you practice regularly for 21 days becomes a habit
