Does Taking Tamsulosin Cause Severe Headache?

I began taking tamsulosin about 18 months ago. Six to seven months later I began to experience migraines that grew in intensity and frequency. FYI, I have no history of migraines or other severe headaches. Last month my urologist took me off the tamsulosin (for unrelated reasons) and the headaches seem to be improving. They are now less frequent and less intense. Is this a coincidence or might there be a connection?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome to HCM.
Tamsulosin is a alpha-blocker group drug used for treatment of prostatic hypertrophy.
It also act on blood pressure by lowering it. If a person takes it for long time, the body tries to compensate for low blood pressure by increasing the blood pressure. This can give rise to throbbing kind of headaches. So, your headache after six seven months of tamsulosin usage may very well be related. It's good that you have stopped it now because that is the thing to be done in case of such side effect.
Hope this will be helpful.
Let me know if you have any further queries.
Take care.
