Does Taking Verapamil Cause Fast Heartbeat And Dry Cough?

I have been taking Verapamil ER for migraine headache with vertigo for over 2 years. My neurologist recently increased my dosage from 360mg day to 480mg day. I had no side effects before, but now seem to feel my heartbeat at certain times of the day. I also have a persistent unproductive cough that interrupts my sentences making talking with people embarrassing. Could these be due to the Verapamil? Beth

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Suggestive of impending heart failure. Verapamil is a calcium channel blocker commonly prescribed in the treatment of high blood pressure, arrhythmia and other conditions like migraine. Based on the history you seem to have developed symptoms which are suggestive of heart failure apparently caused by high doses of verapamil. I advise you to consult your treating doctor for either a dose reduction of verapamil or an alternate effective medication to treat migraine with vertigo.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
