Does Taking Zoloft And Tussin DM Cause Severe Health Complications?

So I take zoloft 125 for anxiety and I ve had a bad cold lately. I just took tussin DM around an hour ago to aid in getting better and for some reason didn t check the RX interaction checker like I normally would until after I took both medications. I m freaking out a little bit because it said I could have seratonin syndrome which is lethal. Should I be going to the hospital right now?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I do accept that Zoloft and tussin dm dont go well together.serotonin syndrome, of course, can vary from less severe to lethal complications.but the most important thing is that nobody can predict in whom it can occur. I have seen many patients who had taken the above combination without symptoms.so,to those patients who come to my clinic with similar complaints, i do make them aware of the symptoms of serotonin syndrome so that they can immediately go for medical aid if necessary.the following are some of the important symptoms of serotonin syndrome to be noted :
1)fever,diaphoresis(excessive sweating),tachycardia(increased heart rate),tacypnoea(increased respiratory rate),breatlessness,diarrhoea,flushing
2)mental status changes like anxiety,agitation,insomnia,confusion etc.
3)tremors,shivering may also appear.
but let me tell you that the development of serotonin syndrome is dependent on the concentration of the drug taken.individual variability does exist.
