I am type 2 diabetic, only for the last 4 weeks taking suplements and metformin( 2 in the evening only). blood sugar goes down very slowly, but i like to have a glass of red wine with my meal, do you think the wine is not going to interfere with the effectivnes of those medications?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and welcome to HCM. Metformin and alcohol has moderate interactions. Taking this combination may cause a condition called lactic acidosis. Symptoms of lactic acidosis: weakness, increasing sleepiness, slow heart rate, cold feeling, muscle pain, shortness of breath, stomach pain. Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol can also lower your blood sugar. If your doctor prescribes these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safey take this combination. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs.
I hoped i answered your query.

Dr Santosh
