Does The Thyroid Gland Produce Hormones In A Person With Grave’s Disease?
IVE BEEN TREATED WITH RAI 20 YEARS AGO FOR GRAVES DESEASE. I HAVE LESS THEN HALF THYROID LEFT. IM TAKING 75 MLG OF TIROSINT, WHICH SEEMS TOO MUCH FOR ME. I HAVE A QUESTION - DO I STILL HAVE GRAVES DESEASE NOW? HOW MUCH DOES MY THYROID PRODUCE HORMONE?
I have gone through your query and can understand your concern... Thyroid gland produces little or no thyroid hormone(thyroxine) in patients treated with Radioactive iodine or RAI treatment. Actually Graves disease is an autoimmune disease in which thyroid glands starts producing excessive hormone. Other associated symptoms such as thickening of the skin on the shins, Bulging of eyeballs. As you have been treated with radioactive thyroid 20 years back & now you are taking 75 mcg of levothyroxine. Your thyroid gland now produces very little or no hormone. So it can be said that you are cured of graves's disease. As per intake of tirosint or levothyroxine, it should be taken for hypothyroidism or reduced thyroid hormone production due to after effect of Radioactive iodine or RAI treatment.
