Does Throbbing Pain And Swelling Of Shin After An Injury Indicate Fracture?

My son injured his shin playing basketball when he ran into some bleechers. This was a week ago. Last night the injured area started to thob and it feels very warm to the touch. He did not tell me (Mom) and he went skiing today. When he came home he told me that it really is very painful now. Could there be a fracture we didn't know about after all this time? He has his leg up with a cold pack on it now and has take ibuprophen. What do you think?
