Does Tonsillitis Cause Water To Flow Out Of Nostrils?
hi i had a tonsils removed two days ago on the 29th September 2012, and when i try to drink anything (even water) it froths up in my mouth and ends up coming out of my nostril. i wondered what i can do to stop this, could it be because i am scared to swallow? please help
I can understand your concern. As your tonsils are now removed, the sinus cavity has become larger. In addition, due to the surgical procedure the uvula and the soft palate are weak. Thus, when you drink, the uvula and soft palate are not able to close the gap making way for water to enter into sinus cavity which comes out through nose. This is a very common finding after tonsillectomy procedure for 4-8 weeks. It will disappear by itself when the uvula and soft palate will get back its strength.
Till then, you should sip small amounts or small sips of water or drinks and drink in a completely upright position. Tilting your head forward will surely make it come out of your nose. Do keep follow up appointments on regular basis so that your surgeon can stay updated about the healing process.
