Does Using Heat On A Swollen Elbow Help In Healing It?

My husband has a swelling in his elbow about the size of a plum or small apple. He has been to the doctor twice. They believe he either may have bumped his elbow, or that he has a sac filling up with fluid. In the past he had no pain but tonight he has some pain, probably due to the swelling. Per doctor s orders he has been taking Aleve. Right now he is icing it but it does not seem to make the swelling go down. Should he try putting heat on it?

Hello,

If there has been fluid accumulation around the joint then applying heat may worsen the condition. I would advise you to get a CT scan of the elbow joint done to ascertain the cause of the swelling.

If there is fluid, it would be needed to take it out. You have to consult with an orthopaedic surgeon for that. Meanwhile, continue taking the Aleve for pain relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
