Ear Infection, Resulted In Grommet Inserted. Get Frequent Infections. How To Prevent Further Hearing Loss?

Hello I am a 75 year old male who has had ear problems most of my life resulting in a mastiodectomy in the left ear some twenty years go, Last year following a holiday in Greece I developed a ear infection in my right ear which resulted in having a grommet inserted, this is still in place after over one year. I still get frequent infections in the right ear and have almost a permanent"glue ear"in this ear. What can I do to : A, prevent further hearing loss and "B" get rid of this glue ear once and for all. Any advice most welcome.

Hearing loss can be reduced by avoiding any ototoxic drug, noise exposure. preventing it altogether may not be possible. For Glue ear, you can use mucolytics and chewing a gum also helps. T Tubes can be placed in stead of grommets if we want long term ventilation. Also get your self examined by an ENT to look for any condition in nose or nasopharynx which can lead to recurrent glue ear. Regards
