Ear Pain After Piercing, Pus Discharge In Yellow, Dark Colored Skin. Why?

I got my daughters ears pierced right after christmas. We kept them clean like told, she came to me last night saying her earrings hurt. I looked at the back of her ear and on each ear a puss pocket was formed. On one it was already eating away at the top layer of skin. The puss was yellow with blood mixed in, the skin around the puss pocket is darkly colored. What can cause this? Her earring are surgical sterling steel.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It sounds as though the area is infected.

You would need to remove the earing because the body is presently seeing this a foreign body. Clean the area with an antiseptic at least twice a day.
You may also want to consider the use of a topical antibiotic to apply. These may be available without a prescription.

If there is no improvement within a 48 hr period or there is worsening then you would need to take her to the doctor for evaluation.
He or she may do a swab and start an oral course of antibiotics.

I hope this helps
