Experiencing Hormonal Acne After Inserting Testosterone Pellets. No Relief With Doxycycline And Spironolactone. Will Bactrim Help?
I am experiencing hormonal acne due to fact I had testosterone pellets inserted 3 months ago. I started takking doxycycline and spironolactone on November 7. Within a week my acne seemed to come on even harder, purging I believe. After a month I felt the doxycycline wasn't working at all so I asked my dr for a different antibiotic. She prescribed Bactrim yesterday. I have not started it yet.......I'm scared, will it cause my acne to purge again? I am going on vacation in 2 weeks.
Bactrim is cotimoxazole+trimethoprim. It is given for pustular/nodular acne Or an acne flare. Its lipophilic and reaches high concentration in sebaceous glands. Results are faster as compared to doxycycline. The only down side with this drug is risk of drug reactions(Bone marrow suppression, Toxic spidermal necrolysis) therefore it cannot be given for longer periods of time.
Azithromycin is another anti-acne oral antibiotic which i feel is much better and faster acting than doxycycline.
In my practice i have even found Minocycline to work better than doxycycline.
I think you should continue with bactrim for 10-14 days. Follow up with your dermatologist in 2 weeks time (before going to vacation).
take care.
