Experiencing Pain, Diarrhea And Headache After The Intake Of Medicines

My wife has been taking morphine sulfate 30 mg 2 to 3 per 24 hours for pain since 2-18-14. Yesterday after lunch was her last one. She said they disorient her to the point of being lost and the pain would be a better trade-off. She has been crying all day with diahera and headache. will we need help with the withdrawals or will she be able to manage?

Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that it is very difficult to stop taking this drug after a chronic intake because of withdrawal symptoms.

I would recommend reduce the dose very gradually, in order to have a better tolerance of withdrawal symptoms. It is not advisable to stop morphine sulfate cold turkey.

You should consult with her attending physician on the above issues.

She may need to take benzodiazepines or other drugs to help her during this period.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards, Dr. Aida
