Explain Why The Patient Stopped Breathing ?
A patient was admitted to the hospital with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. His PO2 was 55 and PCO2 was 65. A new resident orders 54% oxygen via the venturi mask. One hour later, after the oxygen was placed, the nurse finds the patient with no respiration or pulse. She calls for a Code Blue and begins CPR. Explain why the patient stopped breathing.

Oxygen should have been given and has been rightly done. The cause of cessation of breathing could be due to a myocardial infection, respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest and many other causes. Nothing can be said about it without investigative reports.

Considering his PO2 was that low, it was very much necessary for the resident to give oxygen. The patient probably had a cardiac arrest.

adsequet oxygen supply tp brain or any organ is essential for it's viability
patient was already in anoxia with low oxygen in blood .brain gets irreversible chane if oxygen supply is below critical level for more then 3 minutes .with that respiratory center in brain fails and patient die of cardiorespiratory failure
