Facial Injury, Cut On Nose, Profuse Lump After Removing Dressing. Antibiotics Taken, Dressing Done. Advise?

I sustained facial injury 2 weeks ago which resulted in a serious cut on the bridge of my nose with loss off tissue. This was treated in hospital. My GP gave me antibiotics 1 week ago as she thought that there was an infection. Since then I have had ongoing support from nurses in changing dressings. However, I removed the most recent dressing today to change as it had come away and have noticed a profuse lump (which is firm but looks ulcerative) inside the cut. This dressing was applied on thursday previous. During the application of the dressing the nurse used a gel which was pressed on to the wound. I am wondering if this is part of the normal healing process or if the gel has had an effect on the wound or if indeed there has been further infection.
