Father Had Quarter-sized Tumor Removed Through Nasal Surgery. Makes Comments, Does Not Listen To Instructions. Normal?

Five days ago my Dad had a quarter-sized tumor (pituitary macroadenoma)removed through nasal surgery. They had to use belly fat to plug the nose. Post-op, they completely over medicated him (actually admitted to it), to the point that we struggled to wake him up. After they got his pain and breathing under control, everything then was fine--at least on paper with his vitals. However, he's completely agitated, doesn't listen to instructions, is fidgety, makes mean comments (as though he has zero filter), and is almost child like and is self-absorbed (I'm not saying that in a mean way, it's just the easiest way to describe how he is acting). My dad has always been a really direct person, but this is really extreme. He basically got my mom to take him home after only 2 days post-op in the hospital. He's sleeping a lot, just starting to eat, but his mind is racing a mile a minute and his behavior is the same. There's no way she can leave him alone at home right now, but she has a job and I'm just worried.
Is this normal? Will he ever return to normal with his emotions? It's just really upsetting. I get that it's only been 5 days since major surgery, but is this normal? Will any medication help? He sees the endocrinologist later this week. GP did blood work today. All results normal, except we didn't get thyroid test back.

Thank you, any insight is much appreciated

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM,

I understand your concern about your father's condition post operative to the removal of a pituitary tumor.

At the offset let me tell you that after such a major surgery and that too so much early whatever he is feeling is perfectly normal and am sure he will definitely recover.

You must understand that any surgery on the brain causes some stress on the person. This itself will cause the emotional changes your father is going through.

The changes can also be due to the anesthesia which would have been given to him

Furthermore since you mentioned that he was over drugged post operatively, he may be getting the reactions due to that also.

The treatment for all of the above is simple wait and watch. It may take even up to three months for the complete recovery (both physical and mental) to take place.

Meanwhile take the proper medication, give him proper post operative care and support and am sure he will be back to normal

take care and hope he gets well soon

regards

Dr Sriram Nathan
