Feeling More Thirsty And Hungry, Craving For Sweets, Tiredness. Not Pregnant. Any Ideas?

The last two weeks I have become extremely hungry and thirsty. I can eat and within 15 minutes I am hungry again. I am drinking water a lot. But I feel I am craving sweet things and this is very unusual for me as I am a savoury person. I feel tired and irritable aswel. When I am pregnant I go symestral diabetes but go back to normal once i had my baby. I am 42 now my daughter is 20. I wonderd if its possible I may have diabetes ? I am not pregnant as I have had my tubes clipped 6 years ago.

Hello.

Thank you for choosing Healthcaremagic,

I am sorry to tell you that you are having three important symptoms (unusual thirst, hunger and tiredness in spite of eating) for the diagnosis of diabetes in addition to the strong positive past history - diabetes during pregnancy (as after having diabetes during pregnancy, as many as 30% of women will develop diabetes within 15 years). Hence, what I believe is that you may be affected by diabetes, which you should get conformed by your local treating physician preferably a diabetologist/endocrinologist.

Remember, diabetes is a common ailment affecting many people worldwide, there are many treatment options for the management of it in addition to adaption to healthy lifestyle changes like reducing weight if overweight, taking regular exercises and avoiding high fat/ simple carbohydrate foods etc. So, don't worry, just adapt your life style accordingly.

Hope this will help you, Take care.

Hi! Welcome to HCM and thank you for your question. Hyperphagia (increased appetite) and polydipsia (abnormal thirst) are associated with diabetes. However, these symptoms alone cannot be used to diagnose whether you have diabetes or not. A Family Physician/General Practitioner needs to examine you and see if you are exhibiting other signs and symptoms and also ask for a Fasting blood sugar (and some other necessary tests relevant to your case) to be done. Only then will we be sure whether you have diabetes or not. Take care! If you have further questions, I would be happy to help.
