Feeling Of Pressure In The Chest At About 5 Am As If Over Eaten And Better By Sitting Up In A 60 Year Old With Normal Food Intake.

For the last 2 days while I sleep about 5:00 AM a pressure in the chest wakes me up. Its like if I have eating a lot of food and its not going down. I have to sit up in order to feel better. This has never happened to me before, I have not eating late or more than my usual dinner in fact I don't eat too much food. I am 60 years old and usually healthy and don't take medicines.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

The symptoms are suggestive of either Gastro-esophageal-reflux-disease (GERD) due to acidity or hiatus hernia; or, a transient low motility disorder. In these conditions, the ingested food remains in the stomach for longer than usual or, food- along with acid fluids- flow back into the food pipe in lying position (due to GERD or Hiatus Hernia- a condition in which part of the stomach is pushed into the food pipe and thereby, distort the lower sphincter (valve) of the food pipe as incompetent.

A course of anti-acid drug + a Prokinetic drug such as metoclopramide + Probiotic such as, Lactobacilli will give you temporary relief.

You should however, consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me, order required tests, and- based on the reports- will prescribe suitable and curative treatment.
