Feeling Very Stressed And Depressed And A History Of Having Histerectomy

it isn't really a health query, more a mental one ... I had a hysterectomy because of cancer, it was only grade 1 and I'm fully cured, and I was fine for a few weeks but lately I've been feeling very stressed and depressed. I'm wondering if this is connected to my operation or cancer. Or maybe coincidence?

Hi,

The possible causes of your problem are:
- If hysterectomy was done for malignancy, usually it might be associated with salpingo-oopherectomy. Removal of ovaries lead to decreased estrogen and progesterone levels that can lead stress and depression in some women.
- Fear and anxiety regarding operation or malignancy can also add to it.

Gradually these symptoms will decrease usually and you can come to normal state. If the symptoms persist, you may need to take:
- Hormone replacement therapy preferably as herbal extract. Direct hormones may not be recommended to you as you are having history of malignancy.
- Detailed discussion regarding post operative followup with your doctor can decrease the problem to some extent.
- Good sleep, exercises, yoga etc can help.
- If symptoms still persist behavioral therapy and antidepressants can help.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sree Gouri S. R., OBGYN
