Found Atrial Septal Aneurysm Without Shunt Via TTE. Any Risk Associated?

hi this is Ziad 31 years old, 1 year ago i was doing a general checkup and did an cardiac transthorasic echo, the dr found an atrial septal aneurysm without a foramen or shunt, he told me nothing to worry about, you just need to take 1 daily aspirin and that's it.
my question is, does the TTE is enough to decide whther there is a shunt or not? is there any risk for the aneurysm to rupture over time and what will be the risk associated?

Dear Mr Ziad
Welcome to HC magic.
1. An atrial septal aneurysm (ASA) may be associated with risk of brain stroke (paralysis) in future. But this is not proven, neither it is something well accepted in present day cardiology. Moreover should all patients with ASA be given aspirin for stroke prophylaxis is not clear as yet or i would say is not included in standard recommendations.
2. If operator was able to get adequate views, TTE is usually sufficient to ascertain if there is a shunt across ASA or not.
3. No, Usually ASAs do not rupture. The risk (assumed or real) associated with this entity is stroke as explained above.
Hope this helps
Sincerely
Sukhvinder singh
