Fungal Infection, Aspergillosis, Had A Polyp Removed. FESS Surgery, Turbinate Reduction. Why Is It Difficult To Open Mouth?

4.5 weeks ago I had FESS surgery on my right maxillary for a fungal infection which testing showed to be aspergillus. I also had a polyp removed and balloon sinuplasty in the right frontal sinus. I believe he also did turbinate reduction. I am still numb on the right side of my face, right side of nose, right upper teeth, right upper lip... I also have some throbbing around my cheek bone and difficulty opening my mouth all the way. I can only open it about an inch and a half. Doctor says be patient and he promises the feeling in my face will come back, but is this really normal after 4 weeks?

hello,
Welcome to healthcaremagic.
From your Query i understood that you are suffering from Sensory nerve problem in face.
During any surgery, numerous sensory nerves, generally too small to have names, are invariably cut.
Depending on the extent of the surgery, this can result in numbness of the skin or other areas.
This is not typically regarded as a complication, but rather an essentially inescapable result of making an incision in the body.
Most of the little divided nerves literally “wither away,” and other sensory nerves eventually grow in to take their place, restoring sensation once again.
This process can take anywhere from a few months to 1 – 2 years.
There is no limit on how late sensation can be regained, but the longer, beyond 1 – 2 years numbness, lasts, the less likely it is that sensation will spontaneously return.
Occasionally, numbness can persist indefinitely, although this is uncommon.
Be confident. Definitely you will gain your Sensation soon.
Hope this helps.
Take care
