Fungal Infection On My Toenail. Prescribed With Terbinafine. How Long Will Take To Cure?

Dear Doctor,
i have got fungal infection on my toenail, the doctor prrscribed Terbinafine 250gm tab daily, i had been consuming it for last 20 days, but in meantime my nail broke down due to brittleness caused by fungus, it also smells foul, kindly suggest. I'm worried about how long it will take to grow in normal shape.

Hi ..thanks for writing here.Toe fungal nail infection is always tough to treat and it takes a long run course.Many options are available for treatment but at present terbinafine and itraconazole are commonly used .Since you are already on terbinafine ,continue with it .You have to take these tablets for at least 3 months.Damaged nail will break down and new nail will come ,so do not worry about it.Foul smelling indicates secondary infection take antibiotics for it,tab.cefadroxil 500 mg twice daily for 5 days.You can also take tab.biotin for 3 months for fast recovery .Take care.

Superficial clearing occurs in a few days.
Complete cure will take a few months - may be up to 6 months in some cases, until new nail grows from its bed / oral anti-fungal tablet has to be taken to ensure cure.
Treat underlying problems - local like ingrowing toe nail and cleanliness and moisture / systemic like diabetes and so on...
