Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mother is 48 yo, 5 4 , 85 kgs. She also has thyroid for which she is under Thyroxine. She is suffering from extreme lower back pain for the last 4-5 years which radiates to her limbs and she can t walk without stopping frequenly and pain increases on lying down. On MRI it was found that Harniation of disk at L4-L5. The doctor asked for Complete Blood Count . All the results are within the limits but at the end it shows many giant platelets seen . What is the significance of this? She has also been diagnosed with Fibromyalgial syndrome for which sometimes blood clots seem to appear near the skin surface with pain. Please help.
Dear arghya
giant platelets are abnormal platelets which are not able to do their function of blood clotting as normal sized platelets would do. this abnormaility arises from the source of origin of platelets in the bones. considering the blood clots under the skin it is clear that your mother has a platelet disorder.
her bodyache , myalgia which has been diagnosed as fibromyalgia then also comes under question.
would suggest to see a hematologist and get a bone marrow examination done. there seems to be an undiagnosed problem.
feel free to discuss more.
Okay. Thank you very much for replying. What type of disease can cause these platelet symptoms? Is there any chance of fatal diseases? I will consult a hematologist soon but till then please help.
Dear arghya
it would not be right to comment on the nature of the disease without the details. on the net you can read about myelodysplasias (or other bone marrow disorders).
But I dont want you to think about fatal diseases at this point of time. but certainly dont delay in investigating the disease soon.
all the best. wish your mother good health.
