Got Hot Flash, Cold Chill, Nauseous And A Bit Lightheaded. Normal?

I ve always had heavy periods and clots- when I was younger the periods were very painful- I ve had 4 children and my tubes tied 20 years ago - I am 48- I think menopause is on its way or here - the last 2 months I ve had occassional spotting that starts about 1 week before my period starts and occassional spotting about a week after my period. This month the 1st day of my actual period I suddenly had a hot flash then a cold chill and got very nauseous and a bit lightheaded - this lasted about an hour and a half- then I felt better but a bit weak after a nap. That was Monday morning and I ve felt fine since. Is this something that may be normal while going through the change ?

hi,
thank you for your query.
your symptoms all are a part of peri-menopause. peri-menopause is the 3 to 5 year period before the menopause when a woman's estrogen levels begin to drop.

the common symptoms experienced by women during this time are-

-Irregular periods - this is usually the first symptom; menstrual pattern changes. Some women may experience a period every two to three weeks, while others will not have one for months at a time.

-Lower fertility - during the peri-menopausal stage of a woman's life, her estrogen levels will drop significantly

-Vaginal dryness

-Hot flashes - a sudden feeling of heat in the upper body. the woman typically starts to sweat. The heart rate may suddenly increase (tachycardia).generally occur during the first year after a woman's final period.

-moodiness

-urinary problems

-sleep disorders

-nausea

When the ovaries start producing less of hormones estrogen and progesterone, the peri-menopause will start. In fact, by the time a woman is in her late 30s the ovaries start producing less progesterone and estrogen.the ovaries eventually shut down completely and the woman no longer has any more menstrual periods.

there are various treatments fro menopause such as hormone replacement therapy, eating food rich in natural estrogen.

Paroxetine has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of hot flashes.
other drugs are Omega-3,Vaginal estrogen etc.

exercise is also beneficial in such cases.

hence you need not be worried all these symptoms are due to natural progression of the body.

thank you,
wishing you good health

Hi,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic,
You are 48 years it is possible to have hormonal fluctuation which occurs in perimenopausal age but remember it can vary greatly hence it may be still far away.
Irregular period may occur but when it eventually stops for 12 months this is termed Menopause.

Some of these changes are hot flashes, night sweats, difficulty sleeping, vaginal dryness or atrophy, incontinence, osteoporosis,.

This can be confirmed by blood tests like LH and FSH which are high.
Not all women experience all the symptoms so take care of your diet and exercise and medical check up regularly.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
Good Luck.
