Had Nausea And Fainted After Waking Up. What Could It Be?

Hello. I am healthy 34 female, busy but manageable life style, have no conditions or diagnosis. I have experienced vertigo before, usually when trying to fall asleep. Today I woke up at 5 am , felt completely awake, and after getting up to get some water, I felt nauseous, and have fainted. This has never happened to me before. I was alone in the room when I fainted from standing up, fell on the floor, and woke up 30 minutes later with pains in my head... I made it back to bed, and fell asleep for 45 minutes. I have not been sick with anything, and never had concussions. What is it?

Hi,

I have read your query in depth. You have had lack of consciousness for up to 30 minutes. You said that you woke up 30 minutes later.

This is definitely not normal. You were alone when the incident happened. So, we do not know, if it was a fit or just a blackout or something else.

It would be ideal for you to get a plain CT scan of your brain done at the earliest. An EEG may be planned at a later date if required.

Do not neglect your symptoms; watch over it.

Wish you complete recovery and healthy life.

Neurologist Dr. Sudhir Kumar's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

The most common causes for loss of consciousness in an apparently healthy adult are syncope and seizures.

In syncope, the blood flow to brain reduces for a short while, which leads to loss of consciousness. This is precipitated by exhaustion, anxiety, pain, hunger, illness, etc.

In seizures, abnormal electrical discharges in the brain lead to fits and loss of consciousness.

Please consult a physician/neurologist for evaluation, as it can be treated after confirming the diagnosis.

Best wishes,
