Had A Bilateral Mastectomy Due To Breast Cancer And Tissue Expander Was Inserted Being Put On Keflex. Is It A Bacterial Infection?
I had a bilateral mastectomy Jan. 2013 due to breast cancer. Tissue expanders were inserted at the same time. August 2013 the expanders were removed and breast implants were inserted. Almost 3 months later I developed an infection in the area of the right implant. I was put on Keflex for 2 weeks but the infection got worse after two weeks. It was necessary to have the right breast implant removed. The culture revealed Serratia! Does bacteria lay dormant and have the ability to cause an acute infection? Is there any other way for an infection like this to occur other than during the surgery? There has to be a portal of entry so how could it happen other than during surgery?
Hi, Welcome to Health care magic forum. The possibility of the infection may be local, or general, Local infection could be due to the presence of bacteria at the site, during surgery, at the site of the injury, etc. General infection is in the blood, in a dorment stage, or from other source. It will settle, at a break of the tissue like injury, sutures, etc and try to flare in the surrounding tissues. The infection also can spread to the site from the dressing materials accidentally. Now the problem is how to get rid of the infection. wishing for a quick and complete recovery. Thank you.
