after reading your query im little surprise that how this tooth in crowned along with post without a root canal treatment?
ideally this tooth should be root treated and then crown should be placed
i would suggest you to consult a dentist for complete clinical and xray examination of tooth,after that a treatment will be planned.
get the crown removed as it is a normal procedure nothing to worry about it
remove the filling,get a root canal done,refill the tooth and then crown it
if the tooth structure is highly compromised then you have to go for extraction and replace it with a bridge,partial denture or an implant.

The crown replacement after breakage or loosening of crown may be due to-Biting on hard objects.
Impinging the area using toothpicks,safety pins.
I would suggest you to visit a dentist soon and get the crown fixed.
Crown removal is usually done using crown remover,so no need to worry.
If the crown is not fitting properly,it has to be replaced.
Maintain good oral hygiene.
Use soft-interdental toothbrush and dental floss to clean your teeth to prevent plaque accumulation.
Visit a dentist in every 6 months.
Please be careful while biting on hard objects using the crown-placed tooth.

It seems like a post and core is done over your root canal treated tooth and a crown is placed over it. Since there was only a little portion of tooth structure was available a post and core was done to strengthen it. Consult a Prosthodontist to ensure that the crown can be removed and determine the rigidity of the post. If required it should be redone and crown fixed. Another option is the tooth can be extracted and an Implant can be placed.

Usually the post goes into the roots after root canal treatment is done, though it has a high chance of root fracture as a complication in future. But you mentioned, you did not have a root canal treatment done, the post must be of a shorter length.

It is quiet normal for a crown to become loose after so much time, because of constant masticatory load. If the crown is otherwise normal, it can be re-cemented in a painless single sitting. Same thing also applies for a crown with post. Recementation of the same crown will feel as new.

From what you have posted I understand that you have a tooth which was root canal treated. Usually root canal treated tooth have huge fillings like in your case it is the silver amalgam as it was done ten years back. The tiny metal rod may be a post or it can also be silver points which were earlier used as root canal filling material.

If the crown has become loose there is a possibility that old filling had fractured as it was done many years back. I would advise you to see a dentist who will take an xray to check if it is root canal treated and there is no infection. Also the dentist will analyse if only your filling has fractured or the tooth has fractured too. If the tooth has fractured the prognosis may not be good. If the filling has fractured it is advised to replace the fillling with a new filling and go for a new ceramic crown which will be more stronger and aesthetically more appealing.

According to your history i suppose that the crown placed on your tooth is slightly movable.
I would suggest you to visit the Dentist and get the checkup done also take an x-ray of the tooth, it can be removed easily with the help of well equiped instrument known as crown remover so you need not to worry at all.
This crown can be refixed with dental cements.
Maintain a good oral hygiene use antiseptic mouthwash gargles twice daily.

According to your clinical history i suspect you had a PIN RETAINED amalgam restoration over your tooth .

usually post with crown preparation is done only after the tooth is devitalised by root canal procedure.

in your case as you have mentioned you have no symptoms of pain and discomfort related to the tooth , we need to check the vitality of the tooth before replacing the crown.

exact diagnosis can be made only after clinical examination and evaluation by taking radiographs.

if needed , Root canal procedure is done to disinfects the tooth by removing the infected nerve tissue and the root canals are cleaned,shaped and filled with permanent restorative material.

Once the treatment is completed , the tooth can be restored by a post and core preparation with a prosthetic crown coverage.
