Had Acute Prostatitis. Could The Infection Cause The Spike?

I had acute prostatitus approx 4 weeks ago. My doctor did a PSA test last week. The level spiked from arount 1.2 taken annually to 5.9 last week. Could the infection cause the spike? If so, how long before back to normal? My doctor is talking about "cutting" if PSA not lower in 4 weeks. I have done both checkups every year fot the past 10 years plus with nothing wrong. Now this happens!

Hello
Thanks for your query.Based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you had acute Prostatitis 4 weeks ago and noticed that your PSA has raised from 1.9 to 5.9

The raise in PSA level could be due to acute prostatitis .

Please consult qualified urologist for clinical and digital rectal examination and Ultrasound scanning to confirm the diagnosis.

Please take broad spectrum antibiotics like Cifotaxime for one month and repeat Serum PSA .If it sill shows raising trend then you may need to get Prostate biopsy done to rule out cancer of the prostate.

Psychiatrist Dr. Anjana Rao Kavoor's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

PSA levels can spike after infection or a surgical procedure like biopsy. This can give false raised levels. As your baseline PSA has been 1.2 earlier and this time it has come as 5.9 the possibility of an erroneous spike must be considered.

The PSA generally will come down to its real level in about 8 weeks time latest. You may get your PSA repeated and is the results show a persistent high PSA, and ultrasound scan might also be necessary.

DO make sure that you have made complete recovery from prostatitis after taking antibiotics.

Hope thishelps
