Have Habit Of Twisting, Knotting Hair, Sucking Lower Lip. How To Get Rid Of These Habits?

I am a 19 year old female, and I have two habits, one involving the twisting of my hair into knots, and biting/sucking te right side of my lower lip(the right side is now much bigger than the left). My mother believes it could have started soon and she just didnt realize it, but we think it started around the age of 4. It seems like something that I go to to pacify any anxiety or emotional distress, and even when I'm generally happy, I catch myself doing both, in public and and in private. My hair is just so damaged, and my lip has been bigger on the right all my life...and it continues to swell. I don't know why I do these things, or how to stop. I never sucked my thumb, always my lip. Is there a diagnosis for the compulsive need I feel to do these things, and is there a way to discontinue it? Thank you so much.

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.
There is no need to go for any diagnostic tests, as these are habits, which you recognise are not normal.
You need to consult a psychiatrist or psychologist, and would need to undergo psychotherapy and counseling sessions. You would be able to get rid of these habits with proper treatment.
Best wishes,
