Have Hypothyroidism. Taking Birth Control Pills. Cause Of Disease?

i was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism tsh 5.1 - no Hashimoto's. I have been taking birth control - could this be the cause of it? I want to stop taking birth control pills - but am hearing horror stories about it. I wanted to see if this helped my hypothyroidism. I have been off and on birth control for years.
