Have Lower Back Pain, Presence Of Clear Mucus With Blood. Where Could The Blood Be Coming From?

I have a dull lower back pain (like period cramps) and I feel like I have to go #2. Hardly any comes out, but this clear mucus with blood is present. Hardly any smell. Wondering what this substance is? Pus? Mucus? What could each mean? Where could the blood be coming from? I am a 22 yr old female. The other night It woke me up. What could this be?

Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Mucus is very normal thing in intestines. Intestine cells constantly produce the mucus what helps with stool passage. And when constipation appears the mucus is still produced. So it may happen that instead of stool, mucus appears. So most likely this is nothing serious.
The most common reason of blood in stool are hemorrhoids or anal fissure. This issues usually give bright fresh blood on the surface of the stool.
Hemorrhoids can also give a lump in the rectal area, fissure causes pain when passing the stool. Both conditions are caused by constipation and hard stool.

Constipation are usually caused by bad diet. So I suggest you to start with diet improvement. Please increase fiber rich products and mineral water intake and see if it will help.

As blood and mucus in the stool and abdominal cramps can also indicate inflammatory bowels disease, if the diet wont help you should start some diagnostics. This condition is more possible if you have lost some weight recently, have had any joint pains or your abdomen is bloated and a nausea appears.
Stool test, blood work, abdominal ultrasound should be done at first. Colonoscopy should be next.

Hope this will help.
Regards.
