Have Pain Like Pointed Needles On The Face. Pain In Moving Lower Jaw,ear, Nose. Feel Like It Is Swollen. MRI Normal. Treatment?

Dear Sir,

My mother is having very much pain (like being pointed with needles) in different parts on the right side of the face (and right head). She feels the pain keeps on moving between lower jaw, behind ear, through the connection behind nose to ear. She feels like some kind of swelling / inflammation somewhere in these areas. We showed an ENT Doctor who advised MRI of the brain, but the report is normal.
We showed another doctor and he told it might be temporal arthritis and told to take Wysolone 20mg * 3 daily.I decided not to give her this (he is 53) because:-

She doesn't have symptoms of arthritis such as double vision, pulsating headache etc.
Also, I got scared reading the extreme side effects of Wysolone. Also I read that it causes bowel perforation, but she has ulcer. So I didn't want to give his.

Doctor, the pain keeps increasing ( right side of face as explained above) and I am confused what to do. Could you please help?

Thanks,
Sanjay

Hello and welcome to HCM,

The symptoms that you have mentioned- pain of pointed pins on right side of the face and head can possibly due to trigeminal neuralgia.
Trogeminal neurolgia is caused by involvement of trigeminal nerve.
Giant cell arteritis is characterised by pain, headache, double vision, and raised levels of ESR.
ESR is a very a sensitive marker of giant cell arteritis.SR is not raised, giant cell arteritis is ruled out.
Consult a neurologist for confirm or rule out trigeminal neuralgia.
There is conservative treatment for trigeminal neuralgia.
When not controlled by drugs. trigeminal neuralgia is teated by surgical measures.

Thanks and take care
