Have Pulling Pain Under Breast At Top Of Rib. Shoulder Is Stiff And Sore. Had Cold And Cough

I have a sharp pulling pain under my left breast higher part - top of left rib cage. It extends to the right hand side along the top left side of my stomach towards middle of abdomen. Left shoulder is very stiff and sore. I have had a cold/flu for the last four days which includes coughing. If I lay down and get myself comfortable the pain is better. What could this be?

Hi,
It appears that you might be having viral infection and due to heavy coughing your chest muscles got strain giving rise to severe muscular pain.
Take some pain reliever and cough syrup.
If coughing increasing then go for antibiotic medicine course after consulting your doctor.
Ok and take care.

Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The symptoms that you have described are likely to be due to a muscle sprain or stiffness due to voilent cough. Most of the times, taking a mild pain killer and doing a regular hot fomentation in the area helps in decreasing the discomfort.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.

General & Family Physician Dr. Nsah Bernard's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for posting on HCM,

It is obvious that you have a respiratory tract infection which might have complicated to pneunonia or bronchopneumonia. Post viral cough can present as you describe and the chest pain you are trying to describe simply exist as a result of lung parenchymal or bronchial tree inflammation.
You will require a chest x-ray and blood tests (aimed at identifying inflammations/infections) so as to rule out or confirm my suspicions. Your doctor will be able to physically examine you and actually determine the cause of your pain. The pains you are experiencing on shoulder or arms are simply referred pains due to severe chest pain.
If lung infection is involved, then you might require a course of antibiotics and steroidal anti-inflammatory in order to get rid of the pain and the cold/flu symptoms.

Hope this helps and wish you the best
Dr. Nsah
